Sol de Janeiro : Is It Worth The Hype?
If you asked me back in school, I’d have chortled with laughter at the thought of paying 45 bucks for a tub of body cream. I was all about that $3 Bath and Body Works Body lotion sale life. And trust me, I still am about that life. But a few things have changed. Well my income for one. It’s quite different to be a broke college student as opposed to a person with a full time job. But that’s not it. Even now, I’m of the firm opinion that some things just don’t need to be splurged on. Body cream is certainly one of them especially considering you can find excellent cheaper alternatives. So this is basically my long winded way of coming to the topic – introducing the brand Sol de Janeiro and the product that put it on the map – the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. I’ll also be talking about another product from the brand – the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian 4 Play Body Wash.
The Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is basically an ultra rich, luxurious body cream that gained traction because of it’s addictive scent. The company claims that one of the cornerstones of this product is that it helps with tightening effects on the skin. I’d heard almost every possible being talk about it on various social outlets, and after years of resistance, I finally gave in when they had a fabulous sale at the start of this year. So I’ve now been using it for over 5 months and have obviously given it a good shot since I’m actually currently completely out of the product. And here are my thoughts.
Texture : This is one of the BEST body cream textures I have ever experienced. It really does feel a lot more luxurious than your average creams. It has the kind of unique texture that is truly deeply nourishing and I should know – because I have ultra dry skin. But also, it isn’t one bit sticky. They managed to nail the formula down so well, hats off!
Scent: Here’s the kicker. At first, I was disappointed. I had expected the scent to be something so marvelous based on the hype it got. But when I first sniffed it, I didn’t like it at all because it was a little too sweet for me. But that was just based on sniffing. Literally, the moment I actually put it on the skin, something about the cream and my body chemistry gelled so well, that I’ve now grown to love this scent! This is a huge shocker – normally when anything says caramel, I run in the opposite direction. But this particular combo of caramel and pistachio on my skin is just somehow very pleasing. To me at least. I don’t know about how others feel when they smell this on me.
Effect on the skin: This cream has a hint of shimmer in it. Very much like something you would expect Brazilian models to wear. So this does help make your skin look very pretty. However, I am not sure how much tightening effect I see. Mainly because that’s something that is so subtle, that it would be hard to tell. And also, a cream really isn’t going to do much if you don’t exercise and eat right and tone your body for the tightening you’re looking for. I have heard that cellulite, stretch marks etc., and the appearance of those things can be diminished if you nourish and moisturize the skin really well. Dry skin makes those things look ten times worse. So just by that logic, seeing how ultra nourishing this is and the fact that this has caffeine-rich Guaraná extract, I am inclined to believe that this does help my skin – I just can’t quite see it unless I take progress pics over time or something.
Miscellaneous: This retails for $45.00 for an 8.1 oz tub and can be found at Sephora as well as the Sol de Janeiro website. A little product goes a VERY long way, so this tub lasts a good long while.
This is the sister product to the body cream – it’s the same delicious scent in a body wash format. My previous comments about the no need for splurging on certain things still stands. Body wash is another thing that you have a bazillion different options on – most of which are significantly cheaper and have lovely functionality. But, yes there’s a but. I do have to say – this is one of the most deliciously hydrating creamy body washes I’ve tried. That and the scent again, make this a winner in my book. And even though it’s a lovely creamy texture, it cleans very well without stripping but also without leaving any residue. Now I’m not the kind of person to ever leave the shower without moisturizing with an actual lotion, so I don’t know if this is moisturizing enough by itself. I don’t care about finding that out because my dry skin won’t be able to handle it. It lathers really well and lasts a good amount of time.
Miscellaneous: This retails for $25.00 for a 13 oz bottle and can be found at Sephora as well as the Sol de Janeiro website.
So to answer the question that was posed in the title of this post – is Sol de Janeiro worth the hype? Yes and No. I know that’s a very diplomatic answer but hear me out. It is only worth it IF YOU LOVE THE SCENT. The scent is one of those where some people really hate it (like I did in the first whiff) or some people really LOVE IT. I fall somewhere in the category of where I really LIKE the scent. I’m not dying head over heels in love to the point where I can’t live without the scent, but both the products are actually really lovely. And for that reason, I’m always going to try and get them whenever there’s a good sale on the SDJ website. None of that 10% 20 % off at a Sephora VIB sale nonsense. Pshh. Be smart and keep an eye out for better deals.
But yeahh, that’s it for this post! I had gotten a few questions here and there about the SDJ products, so I thought a quick blog post would be best to summarize my thoughts. Let me know what you guys think. I’m so curious – I don’t think I’ve had a discussion with anyone about whether this is really worth the hype, so I’d love to hear your opinions. Thanks so much for stopping by my loves. As always ..
