Dose of Colors Marvelous Mauves Eyeshadow Palette : Review + Swatches
I feel a little lame doing a review about a palette that, in the timescale of makeup launches, is now pretty obsolete? I’m always having this inner battle with myself about only doing reviews + buying things that are new. But really, what about what I WANT to review? Or WANT to buy even if it’s not new? So I’m doing the review I want, and hope that at least some of you may still be curious about this product. And to go off of that slightly negative start to the post, let’s discuss the Dose of Colors Marvelous Mauves Eyeshadow Palette.
DOC Marvelous Mauves : Packaging
The packaging honestly gets an A freaking plus. I mean, A+++. It is absolutely gorgeous, super sleek, luxurious, not cheapy whatsoever, and of courseee, has a really great mirror. I mean this palette is literally the definition of a travel friendly palette.
DOC Marvelous Mauves : Price
This palette retails for $32. Which I admit, is a little steep for 5 eyeshadows? Thankfully, I bought this palette on sale at Ulta for 50% off. Ulta is pretty great about sales like that – if you’re just patient enough to wait, eventually the palette you want will end up going on sale at Ulta for the most part (not always true of course). DOC is available on their website of course and at Ulta. Now that I know the performance, would I buy it full price? Keep reading 🙂
DOC Marvelous Mauves : Shadow Formula
We’ll talk about colors and shades and all that next. But here, I just simply want to focus on the formula. There’s not much for me to say except that the formula is PERFECT. I mean, absolutely perfect (imo of course). These are some of the most pigmented, “high coverage” shadows I have ever used. The shadows are literally like a soft buttery blend to the touch. I promise these are some of the softest shadows you’ve touched. They are a literal dream to blend. And probably the best part? They last on the eyes ALL DAY LONG. I know caps lock is always a little passive aggressive, but I really needed to emphasize that haha. I will say this – they do have a fair bit of kick up in the pan – but there’s no fall out on the actual eyes. I’ve tested the longevity of the shadows both with or without primer, and even without an eyeshadow primer, they last so so long.
DOC Marvelous Mauves : Shades
As you may know, this style of 5-pan eyeshadow palette from Dose of Colors is one that comes in different shades variations. For example, the other three they have are Blushing Berries, Baked Browns and Sassy Siennas. Each one of these is a cohesive eyeshadow palette containing shades of the same color family. As the names would explain, the Marvelous Mauves palette has varying shades of mauve. At first, I wasn’t sure if I should buy the palette. Because it seemed like at least 3 colors would be too light for my skin tone. I am a brown girl (Indian) and my eyelids have color to them. So if a palette contains too many light shades, I don’t end up getting bang for my buck because they either don’t show up or look too ashy on me. I wanted to try this palette, but I was fully prepared to return it in case it didn’t work. I wasn’t about to keep a palette only for 2 colors even if I bought it on sale. I’m not at that level of hoarding yet hee. Long story short, I am happy to report that this palette works so well for my skin tone! The lightest shade is a little sketch for me, but sometimes I use it as a base over which I’m going to put on darker colors anyway. I had thought the second shade would be too light – but because the formula is so non-chalky and it’s very well pigmented, it actually looks really flattering. I end up using all the colors in the palette. I’ve come to realize that mauves must suit me. Because every time I wear mauves, I end up getting compliments on my eyeshadow. And believe me, it’s certainly not for my eyeshadow skills 😀 And this might be a good or a bad thing – but because this palette is so cohesive and easy, it takes the guessing out of which combos you would want to wear. It might make you too comfortable in your mauve zone tho. Personally, I’m fine with that. This palette ends up being the one I reach for so often. It is perfectly appropriate for work, post work social events or for travel. I just can’t say any more good things about it honestly. It is a truly versatile palette. Unless of course, you don’t like mauves. In which case, check out some of the other combos they have. I’ve heard the formula is the same good one across the board. I’ve come to realize this – only use swatches as a guide- not the definitive factor in deciding the good or bad in a product. What I mean is, if I were to look at these swatches myself, I wouldn’t be too impressed. But as you know, swatches almost never tell you the whole story. You never how good eyeshadows look until you actually wear them. So just keep that in mind :))
What’s surprising is that almost every review on Influenster, and other places online have pretty much the exact same thoughts as I’ve expressed here. I point this out because, makeup is usually such a personal thing; but in this case, the results are heavily skewed in favor of this palette. So don’t just take my word for it, read all the other glowing reviews too. So to answer, would I buy this full price again? YES and NO. Yes because the formula is so great, I would literally buy the remaining three without a second thought. Why NO? I already have enough palettes to satiate an entire country’s makeup needs. Purely for the sake of non hoarding I wouldn’t pay full price yet. The second reason to that is also that since I like to blog about makeup, I have to invest a fair bit into new releases. So it wouldn’t make sense for me to pay full price on an older release now, if that makes sense. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there.
So hopefully I touched on every aspect of the review. If I left anything out, please feel free to ask me and let me know what you’d like to know. Have you had the same experience with this palette or you’re more of the ‘meh’ team? As always, I appreciate the precious minutes you take out of your time to come read my rambles.
