Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara

Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara Review

I cannot remember the last time I went out and bought a mascara. For the longest time, I kept getting mascaras in almost every single Ipsy subscription. I think I’ve tried more than half of the most popular high end mascaras for that reason. At this moment, I have almost 15 mascaras in my collection, so it goes without saying that I haven’t needed to try anything new. Then, the L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara came in and I immediately went out and got it because I wanted to do a comparison post between it and the Better Than Sex from Too Faced. You can read that post here by the way. The Lash Paradise is hands down my favorite mascara. EVER. Including high end, drugstore and everything in between. So, while I was in the midst of trying and falling in love with an $8 mascara, along came the notification from Influenster that I’d be trying the new Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara. Needless to say, I was beyond excited because I have never tried a luxury mascara before. So with that introductory story, let’s jump into the review for the Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara.

Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara: Packaging

Sexy. That’s literally the word that comes to mind when you look at the beautiful packaging of the mascara. It is incredibly weighty – you can immediately tell the packaging is well made, is high end. The tube is sleek, glossy and black. Very classic. On the top of the cap there is the typical stunning Givenchy logo. Through two sides of the tube, there runs a metallic textured strip. I think the picture above is more descriptive of the beauty than I possibly could be.

Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara: Product

This mascara has gotten a lot of hype ever since it’s release. The main reason for that is the mascara wand. Here is a bit of the company description about the product:

Noir Interdit Mascara ensures that lashes are deeply reached—from the root up—for ultimate length. Featuring an innovative 90° bendable brush that’s inspired by Givenchy’s backstage shows, this mascara offers a unique stretching formula to sweep on the ultimate lash extension effect—without compromising your lashes and customized volume. It seamlessly gives you intensely lengthened, volumized, and defined lashes.

Brush: At first I thought that the 90°  bendable brush would be a gimmick. And I was right. The angle really doesn’t contribute and do anything to ease the application or the end result. It really is just another tactic to make mascaras seem more innovative. But the cool thing is, if you don’t like using it at the 90 angle, you can totally bend it back to a normal straight mascara wand and use it like that if you prefer. So I definitely like the versatility of that. Here comes another con about the brush. It is made of those really spikey plastic bristles. You know the ones that are quite common in a few high end mascaras. The problem I have with those types of bristles is that they hurt the eyes. Usually when you apply mascara, you tend to wiggle it a little at the base of the lashes to really get in there from the roots of the lashes all the way to the ends. This brush will literally poke you if you try to do that. And because you can’t really wiggle from the roots, you end up with more of a natural lash look. If that’s what you’re after, then this could be great for you. Me, I like mascaras that really give me a false lash effect. Because if I’m bothering to put on mascara, I really want it to do everything for me.
Formula: I actually really like the formula of this mascara for two main reasons – it lasts super well and doesn’t flake or smudge on you at the end of a long day. I would say you can easily get 16+ hours of flake free wear out of this mascara. To me, the formula doesn’t feel wet nor dry ( I prefer drier formulas). It sits right in the middle. And like I mentioned before, I think the combination of the brush bristles and the formula gives you a natural lash look. The mascara is great at separating for sure, no clumps at all. There’s a decent bit of lengthening effect as well. But as far as density, thickness or volumizing your lashes, I don’t think this does a job half as good as my latest obsession – the L’Oreal Lash Paradise does.
Fragrance: You might think it’s odd that I have a section for fragrance in a mascara review. But actually, I wanted to quickly point out that this mascara is quite heavily scented. It lends to the whole ‘luxury’ vibe of the mascara. The scent is definitely a rose perfume that Givenchy might have in their line. It feels like they have poured drops of one of their rose perfumes in here. Personally, I love the fragrance so much. And I don’t think fragrance in a mascara will bother most people because you can’t smell it once it’s on your eyes. But just in case someone is sensitive, then keep in mind that there is a strong fragrance here.
Price: This mascara retails for $29 and can be found at Sephora.

Summary: Overall, I’d give the Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara 2.5/5. I’m basically docking points because it is hella expensive for a mascara, doesn’t give volume to the lashes, the 90° angle of the brush doesn’t do anything except add some innovation and the brush hurts. I’m happy to have received it for free from Influenster, but if I had to recommend this or buy it on my own, I definitely wouldn’t. I’m just going to enjoy it while I have it.

So that’s it loves! Hope you enjoyed my review on the new Givenchy mascara and gained some insight on whether or not this might be for you. As always, I am super appreciative of you taking the time to read my posts. Please let me know if have any thoughts or comments regardless of whether you’ve tried the mascara. Until then ..

Stay beautiful,

Aw, I’m sad to hear that the 90 degree angle is just a gimmick (although I’m not surprised). I’m also a little skeptical about wearing a mascara that’s so heavily scented. I guess I’ll just be sticking to my Birchbox samples too.

I wasn’t surprised either. I pretty much expected the angle to be just sort of a unique selling point but not very effective. I do love scents in everything but yes, pretty unnecessary in a mascara 😀
