GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment Review
I am probably the last person on the blogosphere to review this ultra hyped product; but that’s okay. I still get a lot of questions about this mask and so I figured this review could still be useful for some of you. I have had this mask for almost a year now and I’m on my last use. So I can now give you my fully formed and informed opinion on the cult fave GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment.
GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment – Packaging
The packaging of this product is beautiful. The little white tub with silver accents is very aesthetically pleasing. As it should be, considering how high end this product is.
GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment – Application
Let us start with the application process of the mask. The mask is blackish grey in color, smells very much like licorice which I absolutely love actually. There are a few chunky particles in the mask. The consistency is sort of like a thin mud that is very easy to spread on the face but is not too runny. When you put it on, the mask starts to dry down to a bluish grey color. There is a very strange thing that happens when you put it on. The texture of your skin shows up as little spots on the mask. This is apparently supposed to indicate that the mask is working very well to remove the dirt from the clogged pores in those spotty places. I am not sure if that is even true and what the science behind that is. In any case, it certainly appears like it is doing something for the face. The mask dries very quickly, and some times I feel like I don’t get the most benefit. So I spray my face with some facial water like the Mario Badescu rose facial spray to revive and extend the mask a little more. It is fairly easy to wash off, certain chunks may require a couple more washes.
In the interest of brevity, I will direct you to look up the ingredients online. Key thing to note is that it has a ton of different acids including everyone’s favorite salicylic acid. It has charcoal also. And perhaps the most important thing to note is that it has a high amount of fragrance which could irritate some people’s skin.
GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment – Effects
Let’s come straight down to the meat of the matter shall we? Immediately when the mask is rinsed off, you will notice several things happening. Firstly, I always see a tremendous brightening effect that this has on my skin. I will however emphasize that that brightening effect is but a temporary one as is the case with almost every mask on the planet. The next and perhaps the most important, I notice that my skin looks and feels completely and utterly cleansed. After I wash this mask off, I feel like the cleanest person on the earth if that makes sense. I suppose clay masks by nature do strip everything off the skin leaving it squeaky clean which is what happens with this mask as well.
The major claims of this product are that it helps to clear out the pores, reduce oiliness and help with acne and blemishes. We have already covered how it helps clean out the pores. I cannot attest to the oiliness part because I have dry skin. But in fact, I can say this. This mask dries your skin out completely. Which means that it would be an awful thing to do if you didn’t moisturize your skin properly afterwards, because with lack of moisture, your skin will just produce and excess of oils and perhaps cause the very breakouts you were trying to diminish earlier.
And finally let’s talk about acne and blemishes. Let me just say this straight off the top – this is not to be construed as acne medication. It will not help anyone who has severe acne. With that said, what this does do is completely dry out those large painful pimples that we all know we get after we’ve been naughty and decided that pizza for breakfast and chips for dinner was a sensible idea the previous day. Along those lines, I have realized that it is much better to use this twice a month as a proper mask and only use this as a spot treatment on the rest of the days when needed. This serves my dry skin very well because I am not stripping it too much each time. Every time I feel a spot coming on or if I am trying to get rid of particularly acneaic areas of my face, I will put this on. So bottom line is, while this will not help fade blemishes and severe acne, it does help to diminish and dry out active pimples and helps in disappearing them completely when used a couple nights in a row.
GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment – Price
This little nubbin of a product retails for a whopping $70.00 (USD). YES. It is mind numbingly expensive especially for a mask that you will end up rinsing off in the span of less than thirty minutes. On top of that, I think that the amount of product you get is a joke. Like, seriously? If the tub had been a centimeter smaller, it could have very well been a travel size pot. Okay, I’m exaggerating, but I am bloody indignant about the price per oz of this. On the flip side, the product is very prone to drying out so I do like that you get a small amount of product so that you don’t end up wasting a giant tub. But still, I wish they’d lower the price a bit. A lotta bit. On top of that, I ordered mine from their website. I wish that they’d at least given an applicator/brush along with this.
You can find this at Sephora or on the Glamglow website.
Would I recommend?
MAYBE. DEPENDS. CAN YOU AFFORD IT? THEN YES. WILL IT CHANGE YOUR LIFE? NO. The results are good but not skin alteringly great. Certainly not $70 worth of great. I think this product is good, but wayyy overpriced for what it is. Now. I remember that GLAMGLOW did a sale a while ago where they had a Buy One Get One Free deal on their masks. If that was the case, I would probably repurchase. I’d rather they just have a 50% off sale so I can get only one tub without having to get two and run the risk of them going bad. Anyway, so I had been wanting to try this since forever. I am glad I got it out of my system. I am so grateful that I received this as a gift from a friend, but personally, I wouldn’t be able to 100% recommend this and say, oh yeah, I am willing to spend my one month’s worth of grocery bill on this. If you are NOT on a budget, I would absolutely say go ahead and get this because this is very effective on the skin. No doubt about that. Since I am the quintessential broke college kid, I am going to try something more budget friendly next. I have heard that The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal something mask is a dupe for this.
