Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer
Hi loves! So we are in that exciting time of year when every drugstore brand launches a bazillion things and steps up their game in the drugstore makeup department. Maybelline recently came out with quite a few new makeup pieces as a part of their Spring 2017 collection. Among the base products they launched, there is a cushion foundation that seems to have gained a lot of popularity and the second base product is the one we’re reviewing today – the Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer.
Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer: Review
I think that the biggest selling point of the Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer is the fun little stick/crayon form. This sort of packaging appeals to a lot of us – especially those busy, on the go millennials. As far as packaging goes, I really like it. It is cute and I have no complaints with it. Easy to throw in your purse, bag and even for travel there is a convenience factor in that this is a solid concealer.
This concealer, while definitely creamy, is still quite hard to blend. Fingers are possibly your best bet. I tried it with my beauty blender and it took quite a while. I would either end up taking the product off or it would remain unblended. More on this subject coming up.
I was left unimpressed with the shade range available in this. Maybelline is usually my go to drugstore brand when it comes to having good shade selection, but for whatever reason, unlike their foundations which have a variety of shades, they are always stingy in making enough concealer shades. Tut tut.
Let’s just start off by saying that this concealer left me very confused. I tried it on multiple occasions and I had the same experience. Let me put out the negatives first. First of all, like I said, even though this is unexpectedly creamy, it is still quite hard to blend in this concealer. A brush would take off the product, a beauty sponge wouldn’t be good enough at blending so the best thing to do would be to go old school and use your fingers to tap the product in (I personally don’t like doing that). Secondly, this concealer clings on to dry patches like no ones business. Granted that this is winter and my skin is probably always dry, but I found that this started to cling to my dry patches all the while separating into the most minuscule clumps under the eye. Lastly, the biggest no-no for me is that this product has straight up shimmer in it! Could you imagine me trying to conceal my mustache and it end up looking shimmery? I realize now that the whole ‘brightening’ facade comes from the fact that they’ve added micro shimmer in this product. It is not quite apparent at first, but if you look closely you can definitely see it. Plus if you swatch the concealer on your hand and rub it in, you will immediately be able to tell that there is shimmer in this. Keep in mind that everything I describe, I do so with an extra critical eye and 5x magnifying mirror. So if you were to see yourself from a normal distance, I don’t think these effects are too pronounced. But still, these are quite significant disadvantages to this product.
Now let me talk about some redeeming qualities about this Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer. This concealer definitely does make the undereyes look smoother (probably due to the light reflecting properties of those shimmers I mentioned). This has a really good medium coverage. I wore this during the day and I really liked how it looked in daylight and it even looked good when I checked my makeup in the car mirror. When that happens, you know you’re on to a good product. Again, I wouldn’t wear this anywhere except my under eyes so all in all, with just the sheer amount of negative things I have to say about this product, I would just not bother to get this overall. Because there are so many other concealers in the world (drugstore and otherwise) that perform so much better with zero hassle.
This concealer retails for $7.99 and can be found at any of your local drugstores or at Ulta.
As I always do, I’m going to do a quick summary of the pros and cons of the Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer.
1. Gives a smooth appearance to undereyes
2. Medium coverage
4. Convenient stick form
5. Lightweight, not cakey
1. Tendency to separate
2. Tendency to settle in fine lines
3. Presence of shimmer
4. Difficult to blend
5. Best not to use on spots, blemishes or anywhere other than undereyes
There you have it my loves! Let me know if you picked this concealer up and if you had similar issues? Or if not and you really liked it, let me know, because maybe I’m doing something wrong? I would love to hear from you. I hope you enjoyed reading the post and let’s hope some of my other drugstore finds end up a little more high performance than this one. Until the next one ..
