August Empties Review 2016
Hey hooo loves! Okay, forgive me for a sec here, but I cannot believe September is here. I can’t even remember where Spring/Summer went. Actually, I’m not really complaining. Today was one of the days where I spent an unusual amount of time out and about in the scorching Texas sun. And let me tell ya, it was not fun. So I’m happy to be entering the oh so coveted Fall/Autumn months. Sticking with the summery theme, I have a few very colorful products for you to read about in my August empties, so let’s dive in shall we?
August Empties: Set 1
- Ole Henriksen Invigorating Night Treatment
I’ll keep this one short and snappy. This is a ‘peel, resurfacer’ type treatment for night time skincare use. I thought this was an okay product. Definitely not planning to repurchase any time soon. Read about all the reasons why in my full review of five Ole Henriksen products here.
- OGX Hydrating Teatree Mint Shampoo
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it again. These shampoos are staples in my empties posts and this month’s August empties is no exception. This is definitely not my favorite shampoo in their entire line, but it is still pretty damn good. I actually didn’t find this to be particularly hydrating. However, the main purpose of this shampoo for me was that this was a clarifying treatment for me – a mild version. If I use too harsh of a clarifying shampoo, it can strip my hair a little bit and thus make my hair produce more oil. And considering that my hair is already quite fine at the scalp, it is stupid of me to force my scalp to produce more oil than is necessary. This shampoo cleaned my hair thoroughly and gave it a little bit of a bounce when I got out of the shower after using this. On weekends especially, I love giving my hair a break from styling and just letting it feel all fresh and bouncy and soft. And this shampoo does all of that for me. Highly recommend. If you’d like reviews on other OGX shampoos, just type OGX in the search bar and all the posts where I’ve talked about these will pop up.
Miscellaneous: OGX products are always so affordably price, I love it. These can be found at almost every store, but the cheapest I’ve found these to be was at my local Walmart. I think it’s a bit more expensive online, so be sure to go into your stores like Walmart and Target to check it out. Plus they always have some offers going on on this range. I will definitely repurchase, but probably a different scent/type.
- Burt’s Bees Cucumber and Sage Facial Wipes
For makeup removal, I almost always use my cleansing butters and oils. However, I do use face wipes sometimes for removing makeup from my face, removing swatches, cleaning up liner/shadow wile doing my makeup etc. A recurring theme is that somehow or the other, any facial wipes I use will be used somewhere around my eye. These Burt’s Bees wipes were really good because they didn’t burn or sting my eyes whatsoever when I was using them. They also didn’t break me out and the fragrance was pleasant. The main thing I loved about these wipes is the quality of the cloth. The cloth was so sturdy, absolutely the opposite of flimsy, were great quality and didn’t ball off or tear off on your face while using them. Not much else to expect from a good cleansing wipe. One thing to keep in mind, I don’t really use these to take off heavy makeup especially thick coatings of mascara. And I don’t think these would be too effective in taking ALL of your makeup off completely. These are good for removing that first stubborn layer of makeup though. Or for minimal makeup days. I already have some other wipes in my stash right now, so won’t repurchase these just yet. But definitely yes in the future.
Miscellaneous: Retails for $5.99 for 30 wipes at Ulta.
- Remy Marquis Deodorant Spray
This one is a bit of an ‘ethnic’ or ‘native’ product in my August empties. That’s because this brand, Remy Marquis seems to be more widely available and known back home in India. I haven’t heard anyone talk about it here and a quick online search confirms that this isn’t available anywhere over here in the States except for through Amazon and stuff like that. So about this deodorant – I used to love ALL the Remy deodorants that they offered in their range. Every time I go back home, I bring back with me three to four bottles of a variety of the deodorant. And so this one (the green bottle- which has no distinguishing name) is the last of the my stock. In fact, I love it so much and you can tell that because this green bottle is actually supposed to be for men 😀 The two main things I love about these – I love the various fragrances that they do and the scent lasts on your body for absolutely ages. I mean this is not something I’d recommend for you to hunt down no matter what, but say if you ever find yourself in front of a counter of these, grab a couple.
Miscellaneous: In India, these retailed for about 90 rupees. So that would be a little over a dollar in USD.
- Schick’s Quattro Sensitive Skin Women’s Razors
I rarely talk about razors and such because, to me, they are all pretty similar, they do the job well and I don’t favor one brand over the other. However, these razors deserve a spot in my August empties because of how much I HATE them. These are some of the worst razors I have ever used for shaving. The blade portion of these has a rubber piece on it in order to have a ‘comfortable soft’ feel. However, these are the most ineffective razors I have ever used. You literally have to shave just one leg twice the amount of times in order to get a proper shave. My hair grows back in half the amount of time than it normally does when I use other razors. And the strangest thing is that, on one hand the blade seems soft and blunt, yet every single time I have used these razors they have cut me. EVERY SINGLE TIME. It could have something to do with the angle and design of the blade/handle. I really really hate these so much and I really wanted to include these in my August empties so I could warn you guys about them too. And no, I’m not a shaving newbie that maybe you think I might not be shaving correctly. I’ve been shaving for years now, so I definitely am not new to the concept. Never purchasing these again.
Miscellaneous: A four pack of these retails for $5.99 at Walmart.
August Empties: Set 2
- Rasoi Magic Missal Rassa
Another indigenous product from India in this August empties. When you’re in college, it is honestly extremely difficult to eat healthy because there’s not always time to cook wholesome meals. A lot of the times, I end up eating junk outside and it even gets quite expensive for the wallet eventually. So, every few months, my mum sends me a care package full of my favorite foods from home. And this one is a STAPLE in all my packages. What this is is basically a spice mix. It is made of sprouted moth beans in a spicy curry – the dish is known as Missal. You only have to saute a couple tomatoes, add the spice mix, add water and voila- the dish is ready. You then proceed to eat it with bread. For all of my fellow Indian friends who reside here, I would highly recommend checking this out. It is super easy to cook, takes about 10-15 to make and is insanely yummy. I have like 15 of these currently sitting in my pantry. Thanks mom.
Miscellaneous: Retails for 40 rupees which converts to less than a dollar in USD.
- Ole Henriksen Total Truth Eye Cream SPF 15
I have already raved about this eye cream in a recent post which I’ll link here. You can read all about it in that post. I won’t go into detail here so that this post isn’t like 5000 words long.
Miscellaneous: Retails for $45.00 at Sephora.
- Ole Henriksen Truth Cream Advanced Hydration
Another highly despised product in this August empties. Again for the sake of brevity, I would like to redirect you to this post so that you can see why I dislike this moisturizer.
Miscellaneous: Retails for $48.00 at Sephora.
- Dove Mandarin and Tiare Flower Body Wash
I am not too picky about body washes. Scent is the biggest deciding factor for me. I absolutely love this particular scent of the Dove body wash. And I love the body washes from Dove in general. Currently have another one of these sitting in my shower (a different scent). So if you’re looking for a good, functional, affordable and lovely smelling body wash from the drugstore, this might be your guy. The scent is not too sweet but just the perfect concoction of citrusy and flowery notes.
Miscellaneous: Retails for $10 on Walmart, but I bought this on sale from CVS for less than ten bucks. So just wait for a sale in any one of your drugstores and pick this up.
- Ayres Pampas Sunrise Hand Cream
The last piece of business in this August empties is the hand cream from Ayres. I am a hand cream fanatic. I enjoy keeping one in every bag I own and one in every room of my house. This one was one of the goodies that I received in my monthly Ipsy bag. It was the perfect size to throw in my bag and carry it with me to school every day. I work in two different labs and my hands are constantly getting washed all the time, so a good hand cream is a must. This hand cream had a fabulous scent – very unique. I can’t describe scents if my life depended on it, but this one smelled fresh yet herbal. It has notes of patchouli and lemongrass in it. It reminds of me of what the air in a Hindu temple smells like back home.
Here is how they describe it- “Ultra rich, luxurious hand cream enriched with shea butter, plant emollients and herbal extracts moisturize dry skin. Formulated with fast absorbing lightweight oils that penetrate quickly to leave behind smooth, non-greasy, supple skin with improved elasticity. Lemongrass, mandarin, bergamot, patchouli and spearmint will awaken your senses, while an exotic background of cedar wood releases a musky scent.”
It also did a really good job of moisturizing my hands even in the dead of winter. And surprisingly, this little tube lasted for quite long.
Miscellaneous: The full size retails for $12.99 at Target.
