Makeup Essentials: Travel Edition

Hey guys! I hope you’re not tired of the travel related posts yet. It’s difficult to take frequent vacations when you’re a full-time college student; and so, when I do travel, I make sure I’m documenting every aspect of it. So today’s blog post is going to be a relatively quick one on travel makeup essentials-what makeup is the best and easiest to carry when you’re on a vacation or even if you’re just going away for a few hours. I hope you enjoy!

Travel Makeup

  • Moisturizer
I know moisturizer is not technically makeup, but it’s usually the first thing I will put on my skin underneath my foundation. So I have a travel size moisturizer here from a brand called Naobay. (*after a few uses, I realized that I don’t like this moisturizer whatsoever*). You can carry with you any moisturizer you prefer; make sure it is a travel sized one (100ml or less) if you’re going to be flying to your destination.
Quick Tip: Remember all those foil packets of free samples you get when you shop from Macy’s, Sephora etc etc? This is an ideal time to carry them and use them up.
  • Foundation
You can carry any one of your favorite foundations; my personal favorite is the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream. There are several reasons why I prefer this. First of all, the color is a perfect match for my Indian skin tone, which is a rare thing in American drugstores. Second of all, I love carrying a BB cream over a full-on foundation because I was travelling to Cancun for a beach vacation, and I really wanted something that was light and airy and wouldn’t make my face feel heavy in the blazing Mexican heat.
Quick Tip: Choose a BB cream or a foundation with SPF in it if you’re travelling to a hotter climate. There’s nothing wrong with having added sun protection.
  • Primer
This one is a no-brainer; you will need a good heavy duty primer to enhance the longevity of your makeup throughout your day/night excursions. I love the Smashbox Photo Finish primer.
Quick Tip: I prefer buying a travel sized version of this anyway because the full tube is pretty expensive and even in my daily life, I only use a small amount.
  • Eyeshadow Palette
I don’t recommend fussing with eyeshadow singles if you’re trying to keep your makeup bag products to a minimum. This is why it is much easier to bring along a neutral-toned compact eyeshadow palette of your choice. I love the Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette. It contains some of the most gorgeous mattes and shimmers, and even has a black for all those smoky eye looks. It is the perfect palette for travel; not to mention the quality of the eyeshadows is phenomenal.
Quick Tip: In most cases, it is safer to go with a palette that has browns and nudes. Any eye look you create with brown tones will match all of your outfits.
  • Powder
If you’re going to a hot climate, it is of the utmost importance to bring along a shine-control/mattifying powder. This is going to help keep your makeup in place and prevent it from melting off of your skin. I love the Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder. It is a fantastic drugstore option and is forgiving even on dry skin types. It is easy to carry in your handbag if you want to touch up throughout the day.
Quick Tip: If you are blessed with fabulous skin, you can skip foundation altogether and head out the door with just some of the powder on.
  • Concealer
There’s not much to say about this one. If you want a lightweight but good coverage concealer, look no further than the Maybelline Fit Me concealer.
Quick Tip: This concealer comes doesn’t come in a shade good enough for my skin tone, so I mix two shades to create a custom one.
  • Eyeliner and Mascara
Again, this one is pretty self-explanatory. I can never go anywhere without having at least one black  pencil eyeliner with me. And I do prefer pencil liners when I’m on a vacation just because they take less time than a gel or liquid liner. I don’t want to be spending hours doing my makeup instead of using that time to go around exploring. The best long-lasting smudge proof liner in my collection is the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On eye pencil. You also want to carry a mascara that does it all: volumizing, lengthening all that jazz. My favorite one ever is the Tarte Lights Camera Lashes. Read me rave about it in a previous post here.
Quick Tip: It is better to carry a waterproof mascara if you’re going to be in the water (cue pool parties and skinny dips). I learned this the hard way when I was wearing mascara during my snorkeling activities in cancun.

Travel Makeup

  • Lip Products
I am a lip product junkie so I brought more lipsticks than anyone could possibly need on a vacation. So you can choose to bring whichever lipstick, gloss etc. you prefer. But here are some of the ones I packed. I brought one gloss which was the Stila Lip Glaze and one browny nude lip liner by Milani. I brought two liquid lipsticks: one is Ofra Cosmetics Miami Fever by Kathleen Lights and the other is Kat Von D Lolita. And finally, the only lipstick I packed was a matte lip crayon by TreStique.
Quick Tip: My most used lip product was the red lip crayon by TreStique because it is incredibly easy to just throw it on and walk out the door.

That, my friends, is the end of this post. I hope you find some of these tips helpful in your next vacation adventure.

Much Love,

neighha
